If Maternity Shoots Make You Cringe, Read This

Aug 29, 2025

An honest, natural in-home maternity photo session that was not cringe photographed in Farragut, TN.

If maternity shoots make you cringe – read this post. Because I get it. There are some cringe worthy maternity photoshoots out there on the world-wide-web I’m sure you’ve come across. They leave you wondering if you really want this for yourself.

Let me be the first to say, as family and newborn photographer in Knoxville, TN, it does not have to be this way. Your maternity session does not have to be themed, have hollow-stiff posing or include fru-fru, frills, or flower crowns like the rest of the internet seems to portray. Let’s get down to what a maternity session is really all about – you!

Why do women choose a maternity session?

Pregnancy is a wild ride. Your body, mind and emotions are ever changing. Your family is growing. This new life inside of you is about to make their debut and flip your whole world upside down. You’re in this beautiful limbo of the “old you” and “new you”, if I can dare put it that way. So if there was ever a time to document yourself, it’s now.

So why do women opt out of maternity photos?

Simple. It’s so intimidating being in front of the camera. Especially when you’re the star of the show. It can feel vulnerable. Pregnancy doesn’t always leave you feeling your best. And if your preconceived notions of maternity photos is what we previously touched on, then yes, I can see the hesitation. 😉

So here are somethings to consider when booking your maternity photos:

1. You’ll never feel “ready.”

Let’s just be honest, life is always busy, you’re gonna feel tired, and there will always be an excuse. But time, nor does your baby, wait. Pregnancy is temporary. Now is the time to document this sacred journey you’ve been on.

2. It’s a time to slow down & celebrate.

Pregnancy can be overwhelming with doctor’s appointments, preparations, and daily responsibilities. A maternity photo session is a rare chance to pause, reflect, and fully embrace the joy of motherhood-to-be. It’s not just about the pictures; it’s about giving yourself permission to celebrate this miracle and the journey you are on.

3. Timing matters – don’t wait til it’s too late!

The ideal time for a maternity session is between 28-34 weeks.

4. You’re in control – no cringe.

You can make this photo session what you want it to be. If you prefer something simple and natural—like cozy photos at home, a quiet walk in the park, or candid moments with your partner preparing the nursery—your photographer can design the experience around that. A good photographer will listen to your vision, respect your boundaries, and make sure the experience feels comfortable and empowering. No heart shaped hands over the bump or irrelevant props.

5. You can do it solo or with your family.

There is no right or wrong with this. Your maternity photo session can just be you, with your family, or a little of both. It’s really what you prefer.

In the end, a maternity photo session is much more than photographs—it’s an investment in memories, confidence, family legacy, and joy. Don’t let what you may have seen on the internet detract you from the kind of dream session you could have. Because maternity photos can be as genuine, timeless, and comfortable as you want them to be. Even if you feel timid, the value of having these moments captured is something you will treasure for a lifetime.
