A longer photo session is better for your kids | Knoxville Family Photographer

Jun 3, 2025

If you’ve ever felt stressed trying to wrangle your kids into smiling for family photos in a short amount of time, you’re not alone. Many parents opt for mini sessions, thinking they’re easier for little attention spans. But in reality, shorter sessions can actually create more pressure. A longer photo session leaves room for everyone to get to know each other and for the authentic moments to stand out.

As a Knoxville photographer specializing in lifestyle family photos, I offer in-home sessions that typically last 1-2 hours. In my experience, I have learned that a longer session is the best way to get meaningful, natural, and stress-free photos of your family. Here’s why:

1. I am a stranger to your kids

When we start our session, your kids don’t know me yet. If we only have 15 minutes together, that’s barely enough time for them to warm up! A longer session allows them to get comfortable, be themselves, and forget the camera is even there. That’s when the real magic happens — genuine smiles, silly giggles, and all the little moments that make your family special.

2. Shorter sessions bring stress

Cramming everything into 15 minutes can feel like a race against the clock. Instead of going with the flow, you might find yourself shouting orders to “smile!” or “look here!” trying to make the most of the short time. But that kind of pressure takes away from the joy of the moment.

When you invest in family photos, you want them to be perfect. But perfection isn’t about stiff poses, it’s about connection. A longer photo session lets you settle in, embrace the little imperfections, and capture moments that actually feel like you.

3. The real fun begins when everyone has relaxed

The first 15-20 minutes of any session are typically warm-up time. Kids are figuring things out, parents are adjusting, and everyone is still a little on edge. But once we get past that, the magic starts. With a longer photo session, we have time for real interactions and natural play. If a toddler needs a snack break or a quick cuddle, it’s no problem. There’s no rush and no stress, just space to be together.

4. Longer sessions give some cushion time

Let’s be real for a second. Toddlers have meltdowns. Sometimes they last 15 minutes or more. If your session is only 15-20 minutes long, what happens if that’s the exact window your child decides to have a bad day?

While we can plan and prep for happy toddlers (check out this post for tips), we can’t predict their moods. But in a 1-2 hour lifestyle family session, we don’t have to worry about one tough moment ruining everything. There’s time for breaks, time for cuddles, time to regroup, and still time for beautiful photos after.

5. A longer session let’s everyone enjoy the process

If “family photos” make you think of forced smiles and stressful coordination, it doesn’t have to be that way! Longer sessions give you the chance to make the experience your own. Think about what makes your family you. Do you love baking together? Playing board games? Running around in the backyard? Your session doesn’t have to look like everyone else’s. It can be your version of (beautifully documented) family time.

So, are short sessions really worth it?

Mini sessions are great if you just need a quick holiday card photo, but they don’t leave room for depth, creativity, or genuine moments. A longer session, on the other hand, gives you the chance to enjoy the experience, embrace the chaos, and turn family photos into a fun memory rather than just another task on your to-do list.

So instead of stressing over making everything perfect in 15 minutes, consider the peace and joy of a longer session. It might just become a special date-day with your family — not just another photo shoot.
