When do I book my newborn session? | Knoxville Newborn Photographer

Feb 22, 2026

If we were sitting down for coffee and you told me you were expecting, this is exactly what I’d say if you asked about newborn photos 💛 One of the most common questions I hear as a Knoxville newborn photographer is: When is the best time to book a newborn session?

“When do I book my newborn session?” The short answer: earlier than you think—both in booking and in timing the actual session.

Book Your Newborn Session Before Baby Arrives

One of the biggest surprises for expecting parents is learning that newborn sessions need to be booked way earlier than you’d expect. As a Knoxville newborn photographer, I always recommend reaching out during your second or early third trimester. I know it feels early—your baby isn’t even here yet!—but newborn photographers only take a limited number of sessions each month so we can stay flexible around due dates (because babies never check the calendar first).

Booking ahead just means peace of mind. Once you’re on the calendar, you’re set. After your baby arrives, we’ll choose the actual session date based on how you and baby are feeling. I love being able to offer this kind of flexibility to my new moms and dads because postpartum is a roller coaster. You don’t need to be tied down to one specific date right away.

Which leads us to our next point…

When Does the Actual Newborn Session Take Place?

Now let’s talk about when the photos actually happen, because this part surprises people too. While you may hear that newborn photos must be done in the first 10 days, that’s not always realistic—or necessary. In fact, most newborn sessions I photograph take place when babies are about 2–8 weeks old. As a newborn photographer in Knoxville, TN, I never want new moms to put the pressure on themselves that they have to have fresh “first 48-hours” images or even the session done in the first week. Let’s wait at least two weeks before I come over to photograph your new bundle of joy in-home.

This age range is wonderful because:

  • Babies are often more settled and comfortable
  • Feeding routines are starting to make sense
  • Parents feel a little more human again
  • Babies may be awake, expressive, and making sweet eye contact

This timeframe works beautifully for lifestyle newborn photography in Knoxville, allowing for sweet stretches, eye contact, and natural family interactions. Plus Mom, you can relax in your own home. I will come to you!

Why Timing Matters (But Flexibility Matters More)

Every baby is different. Some love to curl up and snooze, while others prefer to stay awake and observe the world. As a Knoxville newborn photographer, I revolve my sessions around your baby—not the clock. Choosing a 2–8 week window gives us the flexibility to capture authentic moments without pressure. I don’t put a hard cut off on your session time as well to accommodate you and baby. The most magical of images will naturally unfold when we give them time for that lifestyle feel.

Overall, the best time to schedule your newborn session is before your baby is born, with plans to photograph them within their first two months of life. Early booking secures your spot on my calendar, and flexible timing ensures a calm, enjoyable experience for everyone involved.

If you’re expecting and thinking about newborn photos, now is the perfect time to reach out to me! Your future self—and those tiny details you’ll never want to forget—will thank you. 💛
