A gorgeous winter gardens maternity session with first-time parents and the most feminine and whimsical details

This maternity session was special from the beginning. It wasn’t just because Sarah is my sister-in-law. It was also because she approached the session with so much intentionality and vision. Sarah, who has her own successful YouTube channel @SarahKathleenRomantic, has a remarkable sense of style – soft, feminine, and undeniably romantic. We set out to create a whimsical winter Knoxville Botanical Gardens maternity session that would reflect her essence beautifully.

Sarah’s outfit choice held a unique sentimental value. She had set aside a gorgeous Love Shack Fancy dress just for this occasion. Even before she was pregnant, she knew this was the dress. It’s super flowy and feminine and pink, so even though Sarah and Paul were expecting a boy, it felt perfect. Before Sarah’s Nana passed away a few years ago, she had shown her the dress and her Nana loved it! The intricate lace details and appliqué especially reminded Sarah of her Nana, which made it so meaningful. 

We shot late in the morning when the lighting was soft and glowy, creating a warm, ethereal feel. Southern winters are a perk for sessions like these, as it wasn’t too cold. The garden’s evergreen surroundings offered a lush, timeless background that perfectly matched Sarah’s aesthetic. Sarah and Paul were such naturals in front of the camera. It was a full-circle moment for me, having previously photographed their engagement and wedding. Being a “family historian” for people like Sarah and Paul is such a privilege. 

Maternity photos are more than just pictures – they’re a celebration of a unique time in life. They capture a couple’s last moments together as a family of two, marking a transition to parenthood that deserves its own spotlight. For Sarah, these images are a keepsake of the grace, beauty, and strength she exudes in this chapter of life.
