Today I am sharing with you 5 hard truths about newborn photos that no one really talks about. All from the perspective of both a newborn photographer here in Knoxville, TN as well as a mom who has been photographed two times postpartum.

My main objection from sharing these hard truths about newborn photos is to empower you, Mom or new-to-be Mom. Because newborn photos are a precious, sacred thing. A memory you cannot redo. Obviously you can’t redo any memory, but newborn photos in particular can never be retaken five years from now. Which makes them all the more valuable.
But if you’re like me, you may already have some preconceived notions about newborn photos. Just Google: “newborn photography” you will see some pretty cliche/stereotypical images. I’m sure you think of over-posed, hyper-themed, stiff or unnatural photos. It can leave yourself wondering, is this what newborn photography is? Is this what I have to have done to with my baby? In short, I’m happy to say, NO!
But before I get ahead of myself…let’s dive in and break down these 5 hard truths about newborn photos no one often talks about.
1. Your baby doesn’t need to be asleep the whole time.
They are just as beautiful awake. You just need to focus on connecting with your baby. As long as they are content and in pure bliss, you should be too. I as a newborn photographer, am not going to only photograph them when their eyes are shut.
2. Newborn photos don’t have to be unnatural poses.
What if, instead of placing your baby on a beanbag or in some sort of rustic crate, we held them close, where they want to be anyway? I’m not against intentional objects and sentimental pieces (i.e. a crocheted blanket or their wicker bassinet, per se, but I am against unnecessary props just for the sake of props. Does that make sense? Let this be your permission to enter into your newborn photography session with nothing except the bare necessities. 🙂
3. Newborn Photos DON’T need to take place in the first 48 hours.
The magic isn’t in the timeline. It’s in the moment. Find a photographer who knows how to capture the moment. The connection. ✨✨ Not just poses.

4. *My most favorite* Newborn Sessions aren’t just about your baby.
It’s about YOU, too, Mama. Motherhood is one of the biggest transformations you’ll ever experience. It’s OK to acknowledge that too. Show up as you are to the session or schedule hair and make up to take something extra off your plate. Purchase that Christy Dawn or Doen dress that would make you feel like a goddess postpartum or wear one of your tried and true go-tos in your closet. Do what you need to do or nothing at all to be present for your session. And find a photographer who will empower you and make sure they are supporting you to feel your best in these photos also (not just baby).
5. These images can be a relaxed experience at home.
Your home is the perfect setting, where everyone will be most comfortable. If you’re unsure about being photographed in-home, read this post – 5 misconceptions about in-home sessions.
So all in all, forget about what you see online – the props, the studio, the “rules”. Leave all that at the door. All you need is you and your baby. ❤️
